Chennai: Former Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) member of the Lok Sabha, Banwari Lal Purohit was appointed as a governor of Tamil Nadu on Saturday.
President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Purohit(77) as Tamil Nadu governor and it is the first time that the state has got a full-time governor after K Rosaiah retired in 2016.
Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar had an additional charge of Tamil Nadu since Rosaiah’s retirement. Purohit, who was earlier the governor of Assam, will replace Vidyasagar.
Purohit, a political leader from Vidarbha district, has been thrice elected as a member of Lok Sabha from Nagpur constituency. He was appointed as a governor of Assam on August 17, 2016.
Apart from Purohit, President Ram Nath Kovind appointed Retired B.D.Mishra as a governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Satya Pal Malik, governor of Bihar, Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, governor of Assam, Ganga Prasad, governor of Meghalaya and Retired Admiral DK Joshi will be the new governor of Andaman and Nicobar islands.
