M Karunanidhi Slams Kerala for Dam Stance

Chennai:Chief minister M. Karunanidhi on Saturday took strong exception to Kerala for raising the issue of safety of the Mullaiperiyar dam.

Writing in his party organ Murasoli, Mr. Karunanidhi termed as baseless the claim by Kerala that the dam was facing threat due to fresh tremors.

The chief minister accused Kerala of adoption a stand contrary to that prescribed by the Supreme Court on the Mullaperiyar dam standoff and said it was unfair. “Tamil Nadu is only undertaking routine maintenance work and that too as per the guidelines of the apex court,” he said.

He also said that the expert committee appointed by the Union environment ministry in 2003 had made it very clear that storing of water at full capacity of 152 feet would affect the environment as we as animals. Mr. Karunanidhi charged the Kerala government with “planting stories in the media” exaggerating the routine work undertaken by the government.

Tamil Nadu is only removing sand bars and bushes in the outlets of the dam, besides undertaking some painting work, he said.

The CM said the Supreme Court had allowed such work to be done. “Any dam’s life can be prolonged only if it is retrofitted,” he added saying the Kerala government had expressed opinions contrary to facts accepted by the apex court.
